2 am – We Have Arrived

We have made it to our Texas home. Finally. We arrived at 1:15 am, after having driven since 7:45 am. Except for gas and a few dog pit stops, the only time we weren’t in the car was in Albuquerque for lunch at around 3 pm. We passed the time today listening to NPR and PRI, plus a book on CD. We learned from two TED talks all about the brain and human’s proclivity for mild cheating, and how we are hard-wired for resilience. Also, we listened to Ira Glass’s This American Life with stories dealing with grieving and death, then a little XM comedy, a little Outlaw Country and finally ½ of an audiobook on Hillary Clinton – we’re up to the 2nd year in office when everything has fallen apart and Hillary is pulling back from her role as a major advisor. We had great weather all the way here and only a minor amount of road construction. This makes almost 22 hours of driving cross-country a lot easier.

We are always shocked when we drive up and see our Queen Anne Victorian here. It is absolutely beautiful. What a welcome sight after that much driving. It’s easy from LA to forget just how wonderful this house is here. The minute we drive up we both say, “Ah, yes, that’s why we are so anchored here.”

The dogs are happy to finally be out of the car. They have run up and down the stairs and in and out of the back door at least ten times. Ray and I followed them just so we can enjoy seeing this place. What a treat.

We also ventured out back to what was a run-down, one room guesthouse that is in the process of being transformed into the most adorable compact Victorian living space, complete with a full kitchen, full bath and loft. Wow. That is our latest project and Darrah Dunn and Chris Robinson have done themselves proud with this expert renovation. I am delighted.

Ray is finishing up taking a bath and then it will be my turn. There’s nothing like soaking in a tub after that many hours in a car. After that, we’ll head to bed. By then, it will be 3 am. Hopefully, we can sleep late in the morning. That would be a good thing.

I am so happy we are here.  Grateful is the word that comes to mind.
