A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Maundy Thursday

Maundy Thursday church.  I served as subdeacon.  The acolyte crew had a lot to do, what with being ready for the ritual foot washing and then at the end of the mass, recessing with the sacrament to the Damien Chapel and then coming back and stripping the altar. Everyone was a bit nervous before church when we gathered to hear who would be doing what, but, as usual, our fearless leader, Reece, led us through this complicated mass with the aid of MC, Randy Williams. The acolyte corp is made up of the nicest, most down-to-earth people who all want to do the best job possible.  They are one of the joys of my life, this group of folks.  We help each other when we are lost, nudge each other when we are about to miss a cue and reassure one another when a mistake is made. “I’ve done that too. Don’t worry about it.” is a common response. Our priests set the tone, of course, and there is a lot of love there as well. Father Davies came in tonight and, sensing the elevated stress, said, “We always do just fine, let’s remember that. Everything will fall into place.”  And it did.

Now on to Good Friday.
