I am sitting in the living room with Liz. She is studying for the bar exam and I am here on my computer writing my blog. In the den, Ray, Rachael and Keara (Rachael’s roommate) are watching the movie Bernie, which I have already seen twice. (I highly recommend it, by the way.) Sarah and Gregorio are home in Arcadia (about 45 minutes from here with no traffic) impatiently waiting for the arrival of baby Luna, who is officially due on April 5th, but who has given her parents reason to believe she might come early. Ron, Liz’s boyfriend, was here early, but has gone home to spend time with his family.
We gathered together today to honor Rachael’s completion of classes at UCLA last Friday. The usual gift I offer when any of my children (or husband, for that matter) has an accomplishment of merit is to offer to make his/her favorite meal and favorite dessert and host a family gathering. Rachael, who like most college students jumps at any chance for a home-cooked meal, quickly accepted my invitation. She and Keara always arrive with hearty appetites, and today was no exception.
We had Rachael’s favorite meal: stuffed shells, grilled chicken, sautéed Swiss chard, green salad, fresh bread from the Farmer’s Market, and fruit salad. For dessert, we had homemade banana cream pie and blueberry cream pie. I cooked all morning. Needless to say, we are now about as stuffed as those “stuffed shells,” but exceedingly happy.
Our next celebration will be Rachael’s 22th birthday on April 18th. Maybe by then we’ll have worked off the extra pounds we added today. At least I hope so. Either way, by then we’ll have a new little girl to add to the mix. I expect Grandma will not want to spend so much time in the kitchen when little Luna is around. We may have to order out!
