This evening, our church had its annual Advent Lessons and Carols celebration featuring the a capella voices of the 12-member LA Schola. The music spanned the centuries with pieces from Bach, Britten, Mendelssohn, Palestrina, Rutter and others; the lessons were from the Gospels as well as from the prophets. I was serving as an acolyte so I got to sit up near the altar, a perfect vantage point to hear the music and see not only the choir, but also the congregation.
St. Thomas the Apostle church is a Neo-Gothic church and is quite beautiful all on its own. Add in the delicate harmonies of these masterful singers and an experience such as this is magical, mystical, and transformational. One can easily imagine being right on the edge of heaven and hearing music wafting from deep inside. Absolutely beautiful!
For those of you who happened to miss this event – the church was full so many had the chance to enjoy it – please consider attending Midnight Mass at St. Thomas on Christmas Eve. This will be another wonderful opportunity to feel transported to a higher plane.
Merry Christmas to all.
