An Evening of Rock and Roll Photos and Stories

Tonight we went to the Annenberg Space for Photography and listened to a presentation by Guy Webster, the famous rock and roll photographer.  He photographed Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, Judy Collins, the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones and on and on and on, and he told stories of meeting these people and spending time with them.

He said the Mamas and the Papas were one of his favorite groups and he had some lovely photos of them, several of which were used for their album covers. Here is one:

He also took some of the early photos of the Rolling Stones:

Not to mention JIm Morrison:

Guy Webster was charming, telling story after story of these different celebrities.

He said that he had known Jim Morrison at UCLA where they were both studying Philosophy and that Morrison was a great guy before the drugs made him impossible to reach.

Apparently, Webster now lives in Ojai. Fellow Ojai residents Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson were in the audience.

Overall, a pleasurable evening.

I got the impression that Webster could have told stories of his experiences well into the night. I was sorry I didn’t get a chance to hear more.

I highly recommend these lectures, which will occur over the next several weeks presented by several other photographers of the exhibit, “Who Shot Rock and Roll.”  The Annenberg Space for Photography is located in Beverly Hills:

You will not be sorry.
