Today was much better. I was up and out this morning to Pasadena and then after students this afternoon, we went with friends and family to the Hollywood Bowl. The Bowl is a must-see if you are in LA. No matter where you sit – and we were in the cheap seats in the back – the music is clear and crisp and strong, and listening to the LA Phil perform while sitting outside, smelling pine trees and looking at the sunset against the Hollywood Hills is beyond compare.
Today’s concert featured:
GERSHWIN: Cuban Overture Gershwin: Cuban Overture BERNSTEIN: West Side Story Suite (arr. Newman) COPLAND: A Lincoln Portrait COPLAND: Billy the Kid Suite
I enjoyed all of it, but the Copland was especially wonderful, particularly “A Lincoln Portrait,” which was narrated by one of the LA County Supervisors. An American flag hung at half-mast on either side of the stage while parts of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address were read. It was touching, especially since today is 9/11. Powerful, indeed.
Copland’s “Billy the Kid” was also wonderful. True Americana.
We walked from the church parking lot and then back, a round trip of about 3 miles. This is good exercise, which I have been informed I need more of. So, that was good. And our friends are lovely people, which makes sharing this evening together even better.
Again, if you want a true LA experience, then you must visit the Hollywood Bowl. It has loads of history associated with it, and the music is glorious. Check it out. It is one LA music venue that will not disappoint.
