I am very pleased to announce that my writing student Alexa Nourafchan has won a national silver medal in the “Personal Essay” category from the Scholastic Artists and Writing contest. This is the oldest and most prestigious writing contest for youth in the United States and required Alexa to win a Gold Key in the Western region (8 states) before even being considered on the national level. There were over 330,000 entries in art and writing in the national contest and Alexa’s award of a silver medal places her in the top 1% of all submissions. She joins a whole group of famous authors who have also won a silver medal in this contest since 1923: Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Robert Redford and Lena Dunham.
I couldn’t be more pleased or proud!
Alexa will be attending the University of Pennsylvania in the Fall, 2017.
Congratulations, Alexa. Well deserved.
