Cross-Country Driving

We are on the last 2 hours of our 24 hour drive from LA, CA to Sherman, TX.  It is 11:56 pm, so we’re looking at a 2 am arrival.  We stopped outside of Wichita Falls at a rest stop and slept for 30 minutes. That was about an hour ago.

I have driven much of today, but Ray is at the wheel now.  I have a slight bit of night-blindness, which worsens as I tire.  Needless to say, we are safer after dark on a long trip with Ray at the helm.

The tough part of this leg of the trip is that the road goes through a series of small towns, which slows our progress.  Local police position themselves on side streets in hopes of nabbing speeders so we slow down to 35 miles per hour.  Then when we break free to the open road, we are facing a single-lane highway that goes up and down hills.  Not the easiest driving at midnight after you’ve been driving since 7:30 am.  The good news is there isn’t a lot of traffic and even in the dark, wide-open spaces span for miles on either side of the road.  Also, there is a pretty moon tonight.

We will stop again if Ray gets too tired and despite my questionable vision, I have been known to drive that last 45 minutes since the highway goes from single to double lanes.

Ray and I had a good talk today about trials in our early lives and though we’ve told these stories before, new insights often come in the re-telling.  Today was no exception.  Plus, it’s always nice to share thoughts and feelings about tough times with someone you love.  Healing seems to come just in the sharing.

We’ve had a lovely trip so far.  Good weather, easy roads and good company.  Those are the elements that make a road trip so much fun.  I must admit, however, that I will be happy when our Victorian comes into view!

As they say here in Texas: “If the good Lord’s willing and the creek don’t rise,” we should be at our Texas home in just a bit.

Wish us luck.
