Tomorrow Sarah and Luna return to Los Angeles. It has been wonderful having this precious time with them.
We had old family friends over tonight who needed to get one last glimpse and snuggle with Luna (and Sarah) before they head back out West. It is times like these that I feel a little sad that we are spread between two states like this. Our friends here are people we’ve known for many years, and as one said to Sarah as she was leaving, “It stinks that you’re not going to be here so I can watch your daughter grow up.”
Yes, it does stink. It’s tough to have distance between you and people you care about.
Luckily, we have these electronic devices that allow for talking and seeing the person on a computer or telephone screen. Imagine those heart-wrenching good-byes when the settlers headed off from family and friends in the pioneer days. Mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers fully aware that this would be the very last time they would ever see their loved ones again. Even a few years back, before all this new technology, the only means of communication was the telephone, telegraph and mail. Luckily, we’ve come a long way from all that! In fact, it might be said that through social media, people are staying in closer touch than ever before.
Our friends would still contend that having someone right here in the flesh is best of all.
I am just glad we’ve had this wonderful time with Sarah and Luna. I am happy I will see them again in only a few weeks. As for our friends, Sarah has suggested “Facetime.” That might not be as good as in person, but it beats many of the other alternatives.
Happy travels to our beloved girls.
