Great Food, Great Service and Celebrity Sightings

We just returned from dinner at a new restaurant in Los Feliz called Mess Hall, which is based on the concept of a mess hall in a summer camp. That are a few camp-like features inside – a display of Swiss Army knives on one wall and metal trays on another – but that’s where the comparison ends. This is far from the substandard food offered to the young in a camp setting; no, this was delicious, perfectly seasoned fare that makes you know right off that you’ll be making this “mess hall” a regular stop for lunch or dinner.

On top of that, the service was excellent, with a wait staff that has clearly been trained to take that extra moment to be friendly and accommodating. A few short minutes after my brother’s girlfriend ordered trout, someone from the kitchen came to our table, explained they were out, and then offered anything on the menu for the price of the trout – some entrees being ten to fifteen dollars more. Once our food arrived, that same man came back out from the kitchen and announced that the substitute meal was being officially comped because it was the restaurant’s fault they had run out of the trout. In addition, when I discovered the cook had put bacon in my collard greens after I had specifically told the server I did not eat pork, they comped my meal, as well.

My meal:

Or course, that made all the food taste even better!

I would highly recommend this restaurant. It’s well worth the drive even if you live in a different part of LA from Los Feliz and I believe you will leave – as we all did – knowing you just ate a superlative meal.

We had three celebrity sightings in the restaurant: Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, and the main fellow in Entourage, Adrian Grenier. Just icing on the cake for our out-of-town visitors.

An excellent night all round. We will definitely be returning in future!
