Happy 4th of July to All

We just returned from a fabulous fireworks display at Lake Texoma, which is about 20 miles from Sherman. We had ringside seats on the Austin College beach, sitting in lawn chairs right at the water’s edge and watching fireworks around the perimeter of the lake. We were there with our good friends Shann Schubert and Darrah Dunn and their kids, and we all enjoyed mild temperatures, a pleasant easterly breeze and clear skies.

We were especially lucky because a group of people just down the beach from us had invested a small fortune in great fireworks, and they did their best to rival the professional fireworks display that was sponsored by one of Texoma’s biggest marinas, Loes Highport. So, we had bright and colorful fireworks close enough to us that we could hear the pop and squeal of the different roman candles, and enough distance from the mega-show at Loes to enjoy the scope of that extravaganza – a perfect combo. Not to mention the impressive fireworks being fired at various other points around the lake and even off of some of the numerous boats that dotted the water.

In short, this was the best fireworks display I’ve seen besides somewhere like Disneyland, which has a nightly show that is impressive no matter how many times you’ve seen it.

After at least an hour of fireworks – it might have been slightly longer – we gathered up our quilt, shook out the sand from the beach and made our way through the dark to our car. The crickets inhabiting the lowlands near the lake were chirping in full force, as if to let everyone know whose place this really was despite the intrusion of a number of visitors. Deafening may be a slight hyperbole, but louder than any collective insect sounds I’ve heard in a while may be a slight understatement. So, find the truth somewhere in-between.

We are now safely home, navigating the dark and narrow country roads that are the only entrances and exits to that part of Texomaland, and I am happy to be headed for my bed.

This was a wonderful 4th of July celebration – “bombs” bursting in air – and I am grateful for this country, my dear friends, and my beloved family. This is a day I can proudly say, “God bless America.”
