Heat, Antiques, and a Dilemma

I took a long nap this afternoon after being out in the heat – 102 – and now at 8:34 pm, I am sitting here groggy, as if I am recovering from a hangover. I haven’t had a hangover in a very long time so this feeling is foreign, and not very pleasant, I might add. We started work at 6 am in anticipation of this very hot day, ending at 1 pm. We went down to our building, which is a block and a half from our house, and began organizing our rather large accumulation of stuff – mainly collectibles – that we’ve been gathering over many years now. This process involves first building a big shelf unit so that we can empty boxes, see what’s in them, and then group like with like.

Because we were the primarily vendor of antique and collectible décor for Chili’s for over fifteen years, we have lots of vintage advertising signs and tins, along with miscellaneous odd collectibles such as gears and gauges from machinery, microscopes, meters from electrical equipment, and intriguing household and farm pieces from eras gone by. All of this is coupled with vintage clothing and textiles that have been gathered over the years and a mish-mash of junk that has been packed away awaiting a time when we could turn our attention to it. The time has come and we have now begun the rediscovery process, which, though overwhelming in one respect, is much like a big Christmas morning in another. After all, every item in those boxes was handpicked because we liked it at the time, so we are constantly pleased with finding stuff that we would buy again under similar circumstances. Alas, we are now ready to sell rather than buy, and this can feel rather daunting given the volume of accumulation. Not to mention that all antique dealers at any level will tell you that the fun is in the buying; the selling is simply a necessity to provide more cash for more buying.

So, having completed Day One of our reorganization process, we are now faced with a dilemma on Day Two. Should we travel two hours early tomorrow morning to Canton, Texas, where there is a huge monthly flea market filled with even more collectibles to buy, or should we traverse that 11/2 blocks to our building and continue the less fun task of sorting through treasures bought long ago and in sore need of a new home?

We are debating.

I will let you know what we decide tomorrow…
