Heat with No Breeze

It was hot today here in LA – 103 was what the thermometer read in my daughter’s car. At 9:08 pm, it is still hot in the house, and we have every window open downstairs and up, every door open except the front one, every fan on. We only have air conditioning in one room in this house – the guest room – and it is not on. So, tonight might be a little stuffy upstairs.

When you live in Southern California, you are not typically equipped for hot or cold weather. We live in a climate that is equal to that of the Mediterranean and so we operate within a range of 68 – 85 degrees for daytime temperatures and 47 – 65 for nighttime temperatures. On a day like today, many houses don’t have air conditioning (including ours) so you find yourself trapped in hot boxes with little air moving outside. Ugh. My husband just said, “Do you want to sleep in the back yard tonight?” The answer is yes. It won’t be too much fun upstairs. Unfortunately, all of our camping equipment is up in Ojai in storage bins. Who knew it was going to get so hot so early this year?

The good news is that it is supposed to cool off tomorrow. The temperature is forecasted to be only be 81. We are going up to Ojai. Hopefully, it will not be too hot there. We are going to fertilize the orange trees and do some trimming. We are also going to begin loading the van for our mid-June trek to Texas.

If I sound lethargic then, at least, my writing is congruent with how I feel. This may just be residual fatigue from the busy weekend, which followed a busy week working in Texas. Whatever it is, I intend to deal with it by getting a good night sleep. Let’s hope the temperature upstairs makes that dream a reality.
