I watched a news show with Brian Williams tonight showing the devastation in New York, Statin Island, and New Jersey in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. It was disturbing to see such loss; upsetting to see such human suffering. Hopefully, the Red Cross and FEMA are on their way to Statin Island, in particular. People there were saying that they were in desperate need and no one so far had come to help: women with young children and no homes; one woman whose 89-year-old mother drowned when the water flooded her home. Of course, there is a great deal of need in New York and New Jersey, as well. Hopefully, everywhere Sandy took her toll, people will get the help they need.
Of course, the positive side of the tale is that people are banding together to help one another. One woman said that her neighbors who she barely knew before Sandy have been “wonderful,” and now she sleeps without locking her doors. Other people have opened their homes for those who need a hot meal or a dry place to rest. Even more have lent a hand in the preliminary clean up efforts. We are a nation filled with caring people and that fact comes to light as soon as the going gets especially rough. Americans are known for their generous spirits. This time is no exception.
My prayers go out to all who have been affected by Hurricane Sandy. I simply pray that God will watch over these folks and bring them what comfort that He can. They are exhausted and many are filled with a real sense of loss – losing their homes and personal possessions. May God’s peace fill their hearts at this most difficult time.
