Luna, the Sun, and Handfuls of Pebbles

luna1

Little Luna (10.5 months) came to visit today and she had a whale of a time discovering the joys of all the gravel that covers our back driveway. She and I sat down in the sun (it was 73 degrees today – sorry you folks in the snow) on the warm rocks. She scooped up handful after handful of the tiny stones and let them fall slowly back down. Occasionally, she tried to slip two or three in her mouth, but I was there to divert her hand. Our dogs, Cordelia and Sammie, were nearby sunning, too, and keeping watch. Luna has taken to calling them “Bah,” which we all presume to mean doggies. “Bah, bah, bah,” she kept repeating all day, particularly when she was crawling from one spot to the next on the driveway as she followed the dogs, ready to settle near them and reach for the next handful of stones. She was also barefooted, so she would dig her feet in the gravel as well, clearly enjoying the warm rocks and the tickle on her tootsies.

As for me, I served as the rock diverter and the witness to our grandchild’s first real experience in a pebbly environment, which was filled with so many sensory delights. Sitting in a pool of warm sunlight, listening as this little girl “chatted” with her “bahs” while playing for over an hour in the rocks, ranks way up there in my list of happy moments. It was pure pleasure to be right there. Yes, I know…grandmother talk. Well, those of you who get tired of that probably haven’t read this far anyhow and the rest of you either know what I mean or can well imagine it. I am just happy to be able to report such a lovely afternoon.
