I am sitting in what we call the “green” room in our house in Texas, waiting for one of my students in LA to call me. We are going to work via telephone and google docs on his college essays. I have just a few minutes because he just texted and said that he was stuck in traffic and it might be a little while before he can get home. I have a second student calling at 8 pm so I’m thinking this might be the perfect time to write a very quick blog post.
We have been spending a lot of time doing a deep cleaning of our house here in Texas. We often are focused on other projects when we are here, which means we don’t give this old beauty the time and attention she deserves. This time, we are doing just that. Moving out all the extras that have accumulated, vacuuming inside kitchen cabinets and out-of-the-way corners, hauling out furniture that has outlived its usefulness, and rearranging furniture that remains. We head outside tomorrow to continue the process in the yard. The house has a gleam to it that it hasn’t had in a while. Though we always dust and vacuum when we come, we rarely attack with this level of enthusiasm. We have reclaimed our place here and it feels satisfying. I think that in light of all the home destruction on the Gulf Coast due to Hurricane Harvey, we are both feeling a strong need to take even better care of our beautiful Texas home.
I have to close now. The phone is ringing and I have work to do.
I’ll be checking back in with you tomorrow.
Until then, here’s a photo of our “green” room, which is a sitting room. The red wallpaper is in the foyer.
Have a good evening…
