After working a day that literally started at 6 am and ended at 8:30 tonight, Ray drove us up to Ojai to the orange grove. The wind is balmy and gentle, the sky clear and sprinkled with bright stars and the quiet that is enveloping this place is peaceful. I am so happy to be here after several long days filled with student after student working either on college essays or college term papers.
Odysseus, Penelope and I are back together again along with a critic named Helene Foley and a student from Barnard as we make our way through the “reversed similes” in The Odyssey. (And if that sounds incomprehensible, imagine what it has been like to decipher that writing prompt.) Alas, we are almost finished and I believe the paper accomplishes what was promised in the thesis. Also, students are working on or just finishing their UC and USC essays and they are all turning out very well. A satisfying, if long, few days.
Now I am going outside to look at the stairs.
Sleep well, my friends.
A daytime photo of the Ojai Valley since it is too dark to take a picture at this late hour.
