RIP Toni Morrison

Toni Morrison’s Beloved is one of my favorite books of all time. This book shook my world in a way that no other book describing the evils of slavery ever had before. The fact that a woman would rather kill her children then have them taken back into slavery helped me to understand just how terrible being owned by another human being could be. Plus, Morrison’s poetic use of language, filled with rhythm, symbols and imagery lifted that story up to a level that is hard to describe. That book and Sula and The Bluest Eye and Jazz. All written to give the reader an inside look at well-rounded African American characters inhabiting their world.

Toni Morrison has been a beacon for a lot of people, including me.

May light perpetual shine upon her and may her legacy stretch far and wide.
