Texas and Our “Little” House Renovation

I am here in Texas where the weather has been beautiful. We’ve had cool breezes – but not too cool – and clear skies. We have been doing a lot of work on our guesthouse here, getting it ready to rent, so we’ve been outside a lot. The wind has been blowing from the south, the temperature has been in the 70’s, and everyone we meet seems to be in good spirits. Fall is impressive in north central Texas with orange and yellow splashes on the trees and crisp clean air. We have been lucky with the weather this week. Sometimes it’s bitter cold by now; other times it is plain hot. But, instead, we are enjoying close to perfect weather.

Our guesthouse is adorable. I know that’s an obnoxious word, but it fits this project perfectly. There are two doors with stained glass, custom-built kitchen cabinets and new appliances, a sleeping loft with an oak ladder, windows with Victorian trim, a bathroom with a claw-foot tub, and a front porch with an awning. All in 250 square feet. It is life in miniature. There is also a little front yard with a soon-to-be-built fence. The whole little house, which was constructed at the same time as our Victorian – around 1894 – has been gutted and rebuilt. So, yes, we are happy it has turned out to be so “cute.” That can only bode well when we start looking for our first renter and see how that process goes.

Tomorrow we wrap up our visit and head back to California. Too short a stay for such a long road trip, but, alas, we have to head back to work. We will return in about a month to check on the work and see how the next project is progressing: a bathroom on the second floor of the “big” house.

Hopefully, the little house will be rented upon our next visit. That’s our plan: to interview potential renters with the hope we’ll find the perfect non-smoking, calm, clean, responsible person. But, I am getting ahead of myself at the moment. Right now, we just want to finish up the last of the details and enjoy our successful renovation.

With that, I am off to bed. It has been a filled-to-the-brim week. I expect to sleep well tonight. I hope so, at least.
