Thanks to the Kindness of a Stranger

A few minutes ago, the dogs barked, alerting me to something unusual. I opened the backdoor only to discover that it is actually RAINING here. I can hear the thumping of raindrops on my outside furniture right now and it is a rare and welcome sound.

On a completely different note, a man came to my door about two hours ago and said, “Do you have a small black dog?” Sammie, our Scotty, was standing right there with me, along with Cordelia, our Corgie.

“Your dog was in the street just a few minutes ago,” he said. “I stopped traffic so she wouldn’t get hit. Is there a way she might have gotten out?”

We were both confused since she was standing right there, but we did have the back door open so the dogs could go in and out and they had both been outside just a few minutes before.

We thanked the fellow, and then Ray went out back to investigate. Sure enough, he discovered a small hole just big enough for Sammie to slip in and out. He blocked it and we brought the dogs in and closed the door, feeling grateful for that gentleman’s kindness.

We live on a very busy street and it would have been very easy for Sammie to have been hit.

People often speak of how LA folks are too much in a hurry getting from here to there to ever stop and be kind. This has not been our experience living here. Often, people here take the time to help, especially with pets.

Pet people do tend to go out of their way. That may just be part of their generous nature.

So, thanks to that Good Samaritan, Sammie is safe and we are not mourning the loss of our beloved Scotty tonight. That would have been awful.

Instead, we get to celebrate the rain, however little it may be. It feels like fall this evening and that is lovely. After all, as much as I love 72 degrees, a little variety never hurts.

Off to bed now.

Good night to all.
