The Joys of Writing “Flash” and Some Reading Recommendations

I currently am teaching an online course on Flash Fiction and Flash Memoir for Story Circle Network. This subject is close to my heart since flash is one of my favorite modes of writing. For the course, I have read a lot of short-shorts both fiction and memoir and have been reminded of just how powerful this short form of writing can be.

Randall Brown is one of the people I admire in the flash realm and he has a fabulous article entitled, “Six Things Your Flash Desires.” I am including the link below so that you might have that information available.

Also, Rose Metal Press has a new book out called, The Field Guide to Writing Flash Nonfiction. This book is edited by Dinty W. Moore and is loaded with helpful essays and stories. Check it out at the link provided below.

There is nothing quite as fun as sitting down and writing a complete story or memoir piece of 1000 words or less. This process forces you to choose your words carefully and hone your editing skills. Jump right in and try it. It’s definitely a learning experience – and fun, too.

Happy “flash” reading and writing.
