This afternoon we went to see “It’s a Wonderful LIfe” performed by the Sherman Community Players (SCP). Sherman is 6o miles from Dallas and is a town of 38,000 people. There is a sister city a few miles away, Denison, with another 22,000 folks so the area population is right at 60,000. This is the group from which the community theater is drawing, both in talent and in patrons. One would assume – particularly in this economy – that this theater would be limping. But that’s not so. The afternoon matinee was almost full and for good reason – this is exceptional community theater.
Trying to pull off the classic “It’s a Wonderful LIfe” is a risk for any theater. After all, it’s inevitable that any American audience will be constantly comparing the production to not only the iconic Frank Capra movie, but also to the even more iconic Jimmy Stewart, who was the quintessential George Bailey. And yet, SCP, had the courage to take on the task, though many must have been nervous that they would come up short in the comparison.
The truth is this is a fine production with characters who are authentic in their roles, delivering lines with a level of sincerity that pushes all doubts aside. The sets and stage direction are also excellent. Anthony Nelson, the SCP’s new artistic director, is clearly setting high standards and providing inspired leadership.
So, if you live in North Central Texas, give yourself a treat and go see this play. It will warm you heart with its message, and you’ll also be supporting the arts, which should also make you feel good. After all, a world without music, dance, art, theater, and literature would be a very dull place indeed.
